Spirituality is typically defined as being connected to something other than worldly goods, i.e., physical objects and material wealth. Maybe that something is the human spirit or soul, or maybe it's more of a process to find meaning in life. And although that may be a typical definition of spirituality, if you were to ask a group of people what spirituality meant to them, it's unlikely that two people would give the same answer.
But although spirituality may mean different things to different people, it's generally accepted that it's a beneficial and useful approach to life. This could be because it can give you a purpose in life, for example, trying to find meaning to those "bigger questions." Or it could because it can help you to become connected to others in life and therefore create a support network of friends. But whatever spirituality provides for you, there can be many benefits.
Studies have found "accumulating evidence" to suggest mindfulness-based interventions can help to promote a better quality of life for people dealing with cancer. The practice of mindfulness is one aspect of spirituality that can prove beneficial both physically and mentally, helping to relieve stress and improve sleep.
Connecting with nature is another aspect of spirituality that can be beneficial. Spending time in the great outdoors can help you to relax and rejuvenate as well as be useful "me time." This, in turn, can help promote patience and forgiveness, and the ability to be less judgmental of others.
Spirituality can also make you a better citizen. Turning away from the material world, you may find that you want to help others, whether through voluntary work or simply assisting a neighbor. Ironically, helping others can be hugely beneficial as it gives you a sense of purpose and helps you to feel connected, something that many people turn to spirituality to find.
These are just a few ways spirituality can benefit a person. There are as many aspects of spirituality as there are ways to practice it and engage in it. Perhaps as with other areas of life, you will get out of it what you're prepared to put in.
